Motor vehicle collisions cost the Canadian economy $63 billion each year, or five percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Pedestrian collisions, which account for 13 percent of all road-related fatalities in the country, cost the economy $2 billion per year. This situation is similar in the U.S. (and many other countries), where pedestrians account for 12 percent of all road-related fatalities and a large component of the country's GDP.
