The artificial arms available today tend to require users to complete movements, often guided by visual feedback. While conventional prosthetics have helped limb deficient individuals become more able, their design has not taken advantage of the latest technology that can enable multiple independent movements. My research program, (Research Chair in Rehabilitation Cybernetics), aims to advance prosthetic technology by developing intelligent control systems that provide greater freedom, flexibility and ease of use. It aims to build on my work on the "Southampton Hand", (generally regarded as one of the world's more sophisticated prosthetic hands in clinical use), by studying novel prosthesis mechanisms, controllers and sensors.
