Finding optimal operating conditions is one of the key steps in process design and development. Also, maintaining the optimum despite process variations is key to successful process operation. These goals can be achieved either using numerical optimization based on mathematical models, or by real-time optimization methods that use experimental data. In the former, computational efficiency is used as measure to a method, while in the latter the main issue is the experimentation time required to reach the optimum.
