TIGRESS integrated plunger for lifetime measurements at TRIUMF

The goal of this proposal is to initiate a program of studies addressing electromagnetic transition decay rates in heavy nuclei with equal numbers of protons and neutrons. The proposed studies will be aimed at the measurements of deformation and non-axiality, as well as the identification of signatures of nuclear shape transitions and shape coexistence. The experimental methods of choice are the Recoil Distance Method and the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method for lifetimes longer and shorter then 1 picosecond, respectively. States of interest will be populated following compound nucleus reactions; the experimental setup will include the TIGRESS detector system at TRIUMF, Canada's research facility for subatomic physics. The proposed TIGRESS-integrated plunger device will work in conjunction with an array of charged-particle and neutron detectors, and is anticipated to provide exceptional sensitivity enabling break-through studies in nuclear structure research.
