A Liquid Scintillation Analyzer (LSA) is a device that quantifies the radiation emissions that occur when radioactive materials decay. Many biochemical experiments rely on the use of radioactive materials as "tracers". Radioactive isotopes of carbon, hydrogen, phosphorus or other elements are incorporated into biologically important compounds (for example sugars and amino acids). These compounds are commercially available and are introduced to living cells (or purified components of those cells). Transformations of these compounds (in terms of their location within the biological system or their chemical nature) are then monitored by "following" the incorporated radioactivity with the LSA as a monitoring device.
