The equipment requested will be used by an interdisciplinary group of researchers to study the physiological role of different proteins in health and disease. The proteins studied range from ion channels in heart and central nervous system, transporters in the kidney and neurotransmitter receptors in the brain to bacterial toxins used as biological alternatives to pesticides in forestry or as anti-cancer drugs. The questions asked by the researchers include how the osmotic gradient generated by the transport of ions through the cell wall influences local processes, how the energy landscape of the internal rearrangement of a protein looks like and how small pieces of microRNA in the cell influence our capacity for learning. In addition, toxins produced by bacteria are studied to find out how they can be applied as an anti-cancer drug. All these programs have in common that they require growth of DNA and proteins in bacterial cultures. The requested centrifuge will be used to harvest these cultures.
