Ultrafast pulsed laser techniques with pump and probe configuration have been demonstrated to be very powerful tools for the investigation of molecular processes. A pump laser is used to initiate a reaction and individual "snapshots" of the reacting system are produced with a probe light beam at different delays, in a stroboscopic way, giving a movie of the process. Probing short length scales and collecting direct structural information requires very short wavelengths, such as given by x-rays, and femtosecond time scale to probe matter dynamics.
