Laser light scattering can be used to probe the structure and dynamics of a wide range of systems including colloids, gels, emulsions and vesicles. Small length scale structures, such as interfaces, concentration or density fluctuations, result in variations in the index of refraction which, in turn, scatter light. By analyzing the time dependence of light scattered from a material and the intensity of light scattered in different directions, a variety of useful material properties can be measured. In particle dispersions, such properties include particle size, molecular weight, mobility and the strength of interparticle interactions, while in gels and other more continuous systems properties include morphology and viscoelastic moduli.
