Laser light scattering can be used to probe the structure and dynamics of a wide range of systems including colloids, gels, emulsions and vesicles. Variations in the index of refraction, due to interfaces, concentration fluctuations or density fluctuations, will scatter light. By analyzing the time dependence and intensity of the light scattered in different directions, a variety of useful material properties can be measured. In particle dispersions, these properties include particle size, molecular weight, mobility and the strength of interparticle interactions, while in gels and other more continuous systems properties include morphology and viscoelastic moduli.
