Transmission/scanning tansmission electron microscopes (TEM/STEMs) are able to produce high resolution images (atomic resolution is some cases) and provide high resolution structural and composition information (from regions less than 5 nm in size) of samples. This type of information is invaluable to materials engineering and science researchers. The application is for funds to obtain a charged coupled device (CCD) camera for a TEM/STEM. The microscope currently uses photographic film to obtain images and electron diffraction patterns of samples in the TEM mode, i.e., when a stationary probe is utilized. Although film produces images and diffraction patterns of high quality, the acquisition process can be lengthy and tedious. Current technology is such that digital cameras possess sufficient resolution and dynamic range to satisfy most imaging requirements, with substantially reduced imaging and processing times. In addition, researchers are able to obtain immediate results, which should enhance utilization of the facility.
