Dual high speed digital imaging system for the creation of two simultaneous, highly resolved digital images of deformable bodies during impact at high velocities acquired at frame rates up to 4,000 frames per second. The image resolution and quality will allow mechanical deformation and strain to be quantified. This kinematic information will then be used for the analysis of the stresses within the body subjected to external impacting forces. Data from carrots of materials under cyclical loading will be used for the indirect determination of frequency- and amplitude-dependent material constants. The deformation of biologically inspired structures subjected to transient loads will be used to assess their mechanical resistance and strength. Images of the human larynx will be obtained through the use of an endoscopic probe in order to quantify mechanical stresses in human vocal folds during various phonatory types and levels. This will help the assessment of impact stresses and their correlation with tissue damage.
