Vibrational spectroscopy is an essential tool to study surface modifications, surface reactions, structure of catalytic materials, membrane reactions, and for overall characterization of materials structure. Raman and Infrared spectroscopy provide complimentary vibrational information and together they provide the complete vibrational picture. Getting this information sequentially from the same sample, from the same spot, and at different regions of the sample allows for unequivocal and thorough analysis of the sample by vibrational spectroscopy. The Illiminat IR II can be interfaced to the Leica Microscope of the Ranishaw InVia Raman Microscope to give the applicant and co-applicants full access to the much needed sequential complimentary FTIR microscopy and spectroscopy. The research program of over 20 NSERC funded researchers including graduate students at the University of Saskatchewan will be enhanced by upgrading the Renishaw InVia Raman Microscope with an Illuminat IR II microscope to the combined microscope. The Microscope will be housed, operated and maintained in a core research facility that is accessible to all researchers.
