The research planned in this proposal aims to characterize and extend the performance of a manufactured building system developed by the Kott group in Ottawa for remote northern regions; 142 homes have been delivered to the Nunavut Housing Corporation and are currently being built. Northern regions face a series of unique design challenges including high cost and difficulty in transporting construction materials, the harshness of the climate, remoteness of the communities and high costs of energy. In the harsh winters, wall, roof, and floor components are subjected to large differences in indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity, which can lead to deterioration and/or failure of these components requiring costly repairs and maintenance and higher energy bills, and likely to discomfort and possibly health symptoms to the occupants.
