Development of thermoplastic composite rods for the reinforcement of concrete

The objective of the project is to develop thermoplastic matrix composite rods for the reinforcement of concrete. The newly developed rods will have many advantage over currently used thermoset matrix composite rods. One main advantage is that the new thermoplastic composite rods will be bendable in the field while the currently used thermoset matrix composite rods can not be bendable in the field. This field-bendability allows greater ease in the use of the rods for the construction of civil infrastructures such as buildings, roads, bridges, parkades, dams etc. The use of composite rods will provide the advantage of better corrosion resistance as compared to currently used steel rods. The better corrosion resistance of the reinforcing rods will provide longer life of the reinforcement rods. There is a tremendous economic savings in terms of frequency of repairs. The manufacturing technique to be developed in this project is to pultrude these thermoplastic composite rods. This is a low cost mass production technique, which can make the new rods to be cost competitive.
