The availability of pure lignin - an abundant, and renewable by-product - with excellent thermal and flameretardant properties make the production of new sustainable thermoplastic composites, which could replacepetroleum based plastics, very attractive. The difficulties related to the disaggregation and dispersion at thenano-level of the lignin make quite challenging the manufacture of good quality products. These challengeswill be addressed using a state of the art lab-scale twin extruder and novel solvent exchange methods.
