Advanced materials technology is likely to play a key role in developing strategies for sustainable concrete infrastructure. The fundamental approach outlined here is based on design and control of the composition of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H)-the principal binding phase in cement-based systems. The goal is to enhance engineering performance and durability by tailoring the stoichiometry and degree of polymerization of the C-S-H. The proposed work is comprised of three parts. The three parts are linked as the strategies employed all involve an appraisal of factors contributing to the contribution of C-S-H toward the development of a new generation of sustainable cement-based materials.
