The genomes of most complex organisms encode more than twenty thousand proteins, which constitute the structural and regulatory building blocks of all their cells and tissues. After protein synthesis by translation of messenger ribonucleic acid, posttranslational addition of oligosaccharides among other possible groups serves critical and diverse biological functions by altering the structure and activity of proteins. Understanding how posttranslational modifications (PTMs) govern protein interactions and assembly is a major goal in the biological sciences.
