We are studying how biological "modules" recognize signals within the nucleus of the cell and help turn genes on or off. The signal is a methyl group that becomes chemically attached to the specific regions of the protein material that packages our DNA (our genetic material that determines who we are). The small modules that we study can recognize some, but not all of these methyl groups. We are trying to understand how the modules recognize the correct methyl groups to properly control the internal biochemical workings of a cell.
