Synthesis of Helical Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Helical aromatic hydrocarbons have significant potential as new carbon-based materials and are thus important compounds in both academic and industrial laboratories. Carbon-based materials are found in many of the OLED displays (screens) found in modern electronics. Funded with an unrestricted grant and in-kind support from the Xerox Research Centre of Canada, a research effort is being pursued in our laboratories to develop new ways of making novel materials and to investigate their properties. The proposed approach will focus on developing a synthetic strategy that utilizes light from common household light bulbs. Thus, new materials can be manufactured using environmentally benign and easily scaled methods. This will allow the preparation of new materials for study and speed up the discovery of new carbon-based materials. This would result in direct benefits for the technology sector of Canada and continued growth of the technology/electronics industry within Canada, leading to overall boosts in the economy.
