Chirality is a property of molecules that has an extraordinary impact on living beings. The use of asymmetric catalysis to prepare molecules having tetrahedral chirality has had an enormous impact on the pharmaceutical industry. Recently, molecules having alternative forms of chirality has been found to be equally as interesting for medicinal chemistry and possess interesting properties that can be exploited in nanoscience, materials science, and catalysis. Surprisingly, the development of new enantioselective strategies to access these molecules remains underdeveloped. The current proposal outlines the development of new synthetic technologies to prepare molecules possessing elements of planar, axial or helical chirality. Molecules possessing these types of chirality are highly valued due to their inherently well defined asymmetric steric environment and interesting optical properties. By developing new syntheses of these chiral molecules using advanced synthetic methods such as asymmetric catalysis, we can access new biologically active molecules and new organic materials.
