Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is a serious safety and reliability problem facing aging power generation plants, especially nuclear power plants (NPP). It results in the thinning and weakening of the pipe wall and can lead to premature component failure. FAC involves a chemical process at the surface and the transport of species from the wall to the fluid. Thus, the control of FAC in practical applications requires the identification of regions with changes in flow chemistry or regions of high local mass transfer. Increases in the local mass transfer rate from the wall can occur at a number of locations in a flow where the flow pattern changes rapidly, including elbows, tee junctions, and expansions. The positioning of piping components in close proximity, such as back-to-back elbows, results in a further increase in the mass transfer rate in the second element. In an
