McFlusion Corporation, based in Ancaster Ontario, is a designer, manufacturer and engineering service provider for cleaning in**place (CIP) and sterilization in place (SIP) systems used to clean and sterilize equipment in the pharmaceutical and food**processing industries. Cleaning or sterilization is performed by passing the cleaning fluid from CIP or SIP units through the**components in the processing lines. McFlusion has plans to expand their markets, especially in the food and beverage industries.**Expansion into different industries and processes would require customizing and optimizing the CIP and SIP systems using much**shorter design cycle times. To achieve this, McFlusion has initiated a collaboration with McMaster University to develop system**analysis tools for their CIP and SIP systems. The overall objectives of this initial collaboration between McFlusion and McMaster**University are: (i) To develop a system analysis tool that can predict the performance of CIP and SIP systems for different**processing lines and (ii) To examine the fouling layer removal rates. It is proposed to use funding from OCE and NSERC to**achieve the two objectives. Models will be developed for the flow and thermal performance and fouling removal in the different**components in typical processing lines based on existing correlations, empirical data, and analytical models. The analysis**modules for the components will be incorporated with models for the CIP or SIP units and for the advanced controller into a**systems analysis tool that can be used by McFluison to predict the performance of CIP units for different processing lines.
