With few exceptions, there is at present no way to directly control the flow of power between generators and consumers in a power grid, so in order to maintain grid stability and prevent blackouts transmission lines are limited in their power carrying capacity. When transfer capacity needs to be increased because of greater consumer demand, one way to do this is by building new transmission lines, which is both very costly and time consuming. If, however, power flow in the system is controlled, it is possible to more evenly balance the load between the various existing lines, and thus allow system operators to increase the transfer capacity of the system as a whole. This increased transfer capacity may be enough to eliminate the need for a new transmission line.
