A gold-nanoparticle kit for the development of tailor-made radiodiagnostics and radio-therapeutics

This proposal deals with the development of a new platform for imaging and therapy of various diseases. Basically, very small particles made of gold (gold nanoparticles) will be loaded with different molecules. Some of those molecules will transport the particle to a tumor, or to the brain (depending on the molecule chosen and on the application needed). Some other molecules will allow to put a radioactive tag onto the gold-particle. This radioactive tag can either be used to localize the particle (thus helping to diagnose a disease with the imaging modality positron emission tomography) or to deliver radioactivity to an area of the body (thus treating a disease, similar to radiation therapy).
