This application requests funding for 3 high performance centrifuges for the preparation of biological samples and the accompanying rotors needed to process a wide range of sample volumes. Typical uses include collecting cells from culture, fractionating cell lysates, purification of DNA and proteins, phase separation of organic mixtures and collection of nano-particles. One centrifuge will be located in a biohazard containment level 2 dedicated room, one centrifuge will be located in the Biological Services facility (a facility providing department-wide access to biology-related equipment), and one centrifuge will be located in the Vederas lab. The rotors and adaptors requested allow for processing of samples several millilitres to litres in size. These centrifuges are used many times per day by approximately 80 members belonging to 15 research groups. It is essential that at least 3 centrifuges be available due to the high number of users spread in location over a 2-wing, 5-story building and also the need to dedicate one centrifuge for biohazard containment level 2 work.
