My research program focuses on elucidating the fundamental mechanisms whereby thyroid hormones (THs) act on cells and developing molecular tools to detect environmental contaminants that act to disrupt TH action. Moreover, our expertise in devising non-lethal and minimally invasive tissue sampling techniques combined with mRNA transcript level assessment has allowed us to make significant contributions to creating innovative ways for assessing wildlife health on a wide range of diverse animal species. The linchpin in our work is the analysis of mRNA transcript levels and we are absolutely dependent upon quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (QPCR). Every manuscript produced by the lab has included QPCR. We are at the brink of disaster. The only two aging Stratagene real time-QPCR thermocyclers that we have in the lab have recently suffered multiple simultaneous breakdowns that severely impacted multiple research projects. We are in great need of a replacement for these units and are requesting an Eppendorf Realplex 4S system that is capable of replacing both. The requested configuration has a more robust design ideal for heavy use and multiple users. The silver block provides the fastest ramp times available thereby reducing run times to less than half of competing systems. The accompanying temperature gradient feature will facilitate primer optimization further streamlining use of the machine.
