Applied Photophysics Stopped-Flow Upgrade

The Applied Photophysics SX-18MV stopped-flow fluorescence/absorption spectrometer was originally purchased in 1995 and was upgraded in 2003 and 2008 with a new sample-handling unit, drive syringes, and operating system. This system has been a workhorse for more than 16 years and has contributed significantly to the NSERC research programs of numerous investigators in several departments at the University of Guelph. This proposal is a request for funds to upgrade the instrument in three major areas: (1) Hardware/software upgrade to Win7 operating system, (2) addition of a photodiode array detector system for rapid kinetic spectra acquisition, and (3) addition of polarization hardware/software for time-resolved fluorescence polarization experiments. This last set of upgrades will convert our Applied Photophysics instrument to the current standard of the new 2011 SX-20MV spectrometers and should extend the practical lifetime of this instrument to several more years.
