英文摘要
Scrap tire material is a major environmental problem. Our society generates more than it can recycle, and leftovers are stockpiled, buried, or burned for fuel, resulting in increasing environmental, economical and health concerns. With this in mind, RIPP Resource Recovery Corporation has focused their attention on offering advanced environmental solutions by minimizing carbon footprint while maximizing benefits to society. During the last few years RIPP has developed a patented process that utilizes significantly less energy than the production of virgin carbon black or burning tires to generate energy. This process produces gases, oil, carbon black and steel. All of these materials are highly desirable for applications such as: heating, power generation, gasoline feedstock and carbon black source in the rubber or plastic industries. Along with their targets of producing highly porous activated char in a controlled manner, a new collaboration between RIPP and Dr. Murugesu at the University of Ottawa has been established. The goal of this research is to optimize the porosity of char, through varying temperature and activation medium to produce highly porous activated char suitable for air or/and water purification. The outcome of this work will lead to new market opportunities for RIPP not only in Ontario but also in North America.
