General aviation (GA) - flight activities other than military flights or scheduled civilian passenger and cargo traffic - is a key part of Canada's important aerospace sector. Included in the GA sector are many flight training schools in all regions of the country. Many of these, like many other entities involved in general aviation in Canada also happen to be small and medium enterprises. This means that even moderate amounts of down time among the operational aircraft could have a detrimental effect on the viability of the GA business. These aircraft operated by these flight schools are flown very frequently, often many times a day, a rate much higher than the typical pace of flights for a private pilot. At the same time, if the aircraft are not flying then OAS may lose revenue. Therefore, it is very important that downtime is minimized to maintain profitability while maintaining the high levels of safety required of Canadian aviation operators.
