Micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) are a class of uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) generally defined as weighing less than 100 g with a wing span of less than 100 mm. In relative terms, these vehicles would be sparrow or humming-bird sized. The types of missions these small fliers can be used for include urban search and rescue, unobtrusive surveillance, wildlife tracking and pollution monitoring. A team led by the applicant Carleton University, including researchers from Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Biology and Electronics, has been developing the basic technologies needed for functional biologically-inspired MAVs since 2008.
