Uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly important to a range of military and civilian applications. Modern UAVs range in size from small quadcopters weighing less than 5 kg to fixed wing aircraft as large as regional airliners. In this proposed program, the team will develop a small low cost UAV for geomagnetic surveys. The researchers from Carleton and Sander Geophysics Ltd. (SGL) will focus on flight path planning for low magnetic interference, sensor integration and flight testing. The program will employ a range of simulation and modeling capabilities as well as leveraging the team existing expertise in UAVs, flight mechanics and geophysics. We will optimize a small, 20 kg all-electric UAV shich has already flown at Carleton for this specific mission. Over this three year program, we will conduct annual flight test campaigns beginning with simple straight flight paths and progressing to fully autonomous draped flight profiles to demonstrate the basic capabilities of the UAV for SGL.
