In recent years, petrochemical facilities have become increasingly complex. As a result, the need for blast-resistant buildings (e.g., control houses) on these sites has increased considerably due to an elevated risk of accidental explosion. In many cases, such explosions cause substantial financial and equipment losses, along with personnel injury and, potentially, casualties. Depending on the type of process plant and its configuration on the site, blast-resistant structures may be needed to protect personnel, as well as to provide the possibility of a controlled shutdown to minimise the impact of the incident on plant operation. In fact, the potential for accidental explosions exists in many other Canadian industries besides the petrochemical industry, leading to the need for functional structures that also possess a protective capability.
