Progressive collapse mitigation is emerging as one of the main focuses of our time for structural engineering research. When structures are subjected to severe loading events for which they were not designed (e.g., accidental explosions, vehicular impact, etc.), damage is expected in the directly-affected region. However, localised collapses must not be permitted to propagate into much larger destruction or total structural collapse. In the case of steel structures, the main related issue pertains to the robustness of connections when they are subjected to severe combined forces and deformations that are significantly different from those for which they were designed.
