The Canadian Mining Innovation Council identified energy efficient technologies as one of four key areas requiring research to support the Canadian mining industry. Comminution is the greatest consumer of energy in the mining industry. In British Columbia, mining uses about 5% of the total electrical energy produced in the province and 70% of this electrical power is consumed by comminution. With increasing energy costs worldwide, there is pressure to develop more energy efficient comminution technologies. The issue is exacerbated by the need to process increasingly complex ores requiring fine grinding and even more energy.
