Increasing demand for internet-based services has lead to the evolution of data centres into warehouse-scale computers (WSC). One of the major problems faced by such large-scale facilities is the interconnections between servers and other elements in the system. Current solutions based on vertical cavity surface emitting lasers combined with multi-mode fibres do not meet the requirements for distance, while InP-based solutions at 1.55 microns are expensive.
