The addition of solids or liquids into solutions is a very important issue in many industrial processes, such as oil sands, drinking water treatment, cosmetics and personal care products, and paints and coating. The efficiency of these processes may be improved if an efficient dispersion and dissolution of these additives is achieved. In order to improve process efficiency, the mechanisms involved in the addition of these solids need to be understood. While the mechanisms are studied at the bench scale, these tests do not always represent the real characteristics at the industrial scale. For example, a bench scale test should use 1L or less of sample, while an industrial scale vessel in the oil sands industry may hold 10 000 L or more.
