New catalyst development for upgrading of crude oil is proposed, to address critical issues pertinent to the commercial use of heavy bitumen and the stringent regulatory limitations on environmentally damaging sulfur and nitrogen content. Deep desulfurization/denitrogenation of high sulfur/nitrogen bitumen, necessary for the competitive production of refined fuels and petrochemicals, is capital-intensive and unsustainably energy-intensive with current catalyst technology. Low pressure bitumen hydrotreating can address such problems, but little more than incremental improvements can be anticipated from traditional bulk metal sulfide catalysts. The problems associated with low pressure catalytic denitrogenation is particularly relevant to upgrading the bitumen produced from Alberta's oilsands resource.
