During the last five years, revolutionary advances in DNA technology have radically changed the way research is done in many areas of biology. It is now possible to generate and access enormous amounts of DNA sequences very rapidly, from almost any kind of organism. Among the disciplines that have been changed the most are comparative genomics and molecular evolution. This proposal seeks to equip a group of researchers from the Centre for Comparative Genomics and Evolutionary Bioinformatics (CGEB) at Dalhousie University with a state of the art, in house DNA sequencing machine. This infrastructure, known as next-generation sequencer, is essential to keep these investigators at the forefront of the evolutionary genomics community. Moreover, current and future CGEB trainees will greatly benefit from learning the sought-after skills associated with next-generation DNA sequencing
