Peroxisomes are structures within cells that regulate important processes, notably lipid metabolism and the detoxification of reactive oxygen. From studies of isolated cells like yeast, we know that there are 12-32 "basic" genes necessary for peroxisome formation. However, we have also shown that loss of peroxisomes causes different effects in the different types that form the various tissues of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). Fruit flies are commonly used in the laboratory to study basic cellular processes that are required to form an entire animal. There is over one hundred years of scientific history where Drosophila has been used to establish how genes regulate development of the different types of cells that form complex organs.
