Every cell in our bodies contains the same genetic material, but what differentiates a neuron from a muscle cell is the way in which that material is interpreted by the transcriptional machinery responsible for gene expression. The mechanisms by which DNA is packaged into chromatin, epigenetically modified, and folded in the nuclear space all contribute to genome function providing the complexity required for multi-cellular life.
