This proposal is for the purchase of large-volume (20 mL) titration and perfusion calorimeters that can be accommodated by the TAM III thermostat (TA Instruments) owned by Prof. Cerruti in the Department of Mining and Material Engineering at McGill University. Calorimeters of this type are not locally available and are required to study the interaction (strength and rates) of aqueous solutes and gases with geological, industrial and biological materials under variable environmental (temperature, relative humidity) conditions. The basic thermodynamic and kinetic data generated by the applicantsand their students will serve to optimize the design and yield of geochemical and biochemical processes and/or develop more reliable predictive models for these processes. Several research programs in distinct areas of the geosciences and engineering will benefit from access to the proposed equipment, including the geological sequestration and safe disposal of carbon dioxide, the production of new building materials from industrial waste, the reconstruction of past environmental conditions, the development of novel mineral exploration and extraction tools, and the design of biomaterials such as implants (teeth and bone).
