Alpine glaciers represent a significant and vital freshwater resource whose meltwater is used to provide irrigation for agriculture, to generate hydroelectric power, to supply domestic usage needs, and to provide a delicately balanced riverine ecosystem for freshwater species that depend on cold water input (such as the bull troat). Many countries, particularly those surrounding the Himalaya, are critically dependent on glacial meltwater.
