McMaster Mesonet is a continuous soil moisture monitoring network established in Southwestern Ontario. It includes 4 weather stations and 216 Time Domain Reflectomers (TDR) soil probes which is the largest number of soil moisture monitoring probes ever established in a research experiment in Canada. It is the only soil moisture research experiment in Canada that provides continuous high resolution soil moisture data. The Mesonet datasets are critical for the development of new information processing technologies namely data retrieval and assimilation techniques needed to extract distributed soil moisture information from remote sensing (e.g. Radarsat) land surface observations. Spatially distributed soil moisture data is essential for various applications in hydrology such as improved flood forecasting, groundwater recharge estimation and the modeling of chemical leaching to groundwater, and drought prediction.
