When a structure is made with nanoscale dimensions, its properties could be drastically different from those of macroscopic structures of the same material. This is mainly due to the strong manifestation of quantum mechanics at the nanoscale. Nanomaterials thus provide major opportunities for engineering electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties. Examples include nanotubes, nanowires and nanoparticles, and they are playing an increasingly important role in modern technologies.
