The proposed research is in the area of integrated Silicon photonic devices, with focus on optical microring resonators as an enabling technology for optical communication and signal processing. Due to their compact sizes, high quality factors, and ease of fabrication and integration, whispering-gallery-mode microring resonators serve as a key building block for many important devices such as lasers, modulators, filters, switches. The recent emergence of Silicon as a prominent integrated photonics platform has also fueled the development of compact, highly functional microring-based devices that can be integrated seamlessly with conventional Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) electronics.
