Tailor-designing environmental catalysts

The focus of the proposed research is designing, preparing and characterizing catalysts for automotive emissions control. These catalysts are currently manufactured with a homogeneous distribution of active catalyst sites along the length of the catalyst. However, reaction gradients evolve during operation, which includes temperature, surface species concentrations and gas component concentrations. This indicates that improved performance could be attained by preparing a designed gradient in active site concentration along the catalyst length to take advantage of these reaction parameter gradients, ultimately resulting in reduced costs, improved performance and likely improved longevity. Based on this premise, two catalyst systems will be designed, developed and evaluated; oxidation and selective catalytic reduction catalysts.
