The application of artificial joints such as total hip implants has greatly improved the quality of life of many people suffering from osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. With an aging population the demands for such devices will constantly rise. Although fairly reliable, current total hip arthroplasty is facing two critical and surface-related challenges that impair its longevity: the peri-implant infection, and the emerging issue of early implant failure due to inadequate bone growth and adverse tissue responses. Solutions to prevent or treat implant related infections are further complicated by the concern over the development of antibiotic resistance.
