The Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer (CPMA) is an instrument that measures the mass of nanoparticles in an aerosol with a range of 0.2 attograms to 1,000 femtograms. This instrument is necessary for measuring the properties of nanoparticles so that we can understand their effect on human health, air quality, and climate. The CPMA will be used to: measure particle emissions from aircraft and develop a new aircraft particle emission standard, determine the emission factors of particulate emissions from oil sands mining activities, measure the soot emissions from flare stacks, and measure particle emissions from gasoline direction injection engines operating on ethanol. This information will help stakeholders and policy-makers make informed decisions about the risks of these emissions and what can be done to reduce their emission or effect.
