Negative impact on environment and human health became a big concern in of oil and gas drilling. Toxic components make drill waste disposal challenging. Currently drill wastes are conservated in landfills and wait for expensive and time-consuming treatment. Amount of drill waste increases daily and requires new ways to solve this problem. The research team of experts in drilling engineering, petrochemistry, biotechnology and environmental science put a goal to address drill waste detoxification in two ways. First, design 'green' (non-toxic, biodegradable) drilling fluids, which are primary source of drill waste toxicants. Second, design novel biodegradation technologies which will make toxic waste clean-up quick and effective. This advanced bioremediation technology will be based on activity of biofilm, well-organized community of microbial cells which are working together to overcome toxic barrier and effectively degrade toxic chemicals. Activity of the biofilms can be controlled by surrounding flow to further enhance biodegrading potential.
