Wind tunnels are valuable assets enabling fundamental and applied research. These facilities enable complex investigations of flow phenomena under well-controlled conditions or to develop novel flow control and diagnostic techniques for advancing knowledge and engineering capacity. Wind tunnels are an intrinsic part of the infrastructure fostering university-industry partnerships. Generally, the operation of wind tunnel experiments requires a high level of resident technical expertise and the initial capital investment is high. Consequently, it is more cost-effective for small and medium sized industry to partner with universities in conducting research and development in the areas of aerodynamics, fluid-structure interaction, environmental dispersion and flow-control technologies. Despite their economic importance, there are few wind tunnel facilities in Canada suited for both fundamental and applied research.
